This piece depicts a kingfisher diving into the water.
In Japanese, the kingfisher is written as 翡翠 and read as kawasemi. Interestingly, these same kanji characters are also used to write hisui, the Japanese word for jade. The kawasemi (翡翠) takes its name from this shared character, inspired by the bird's jewel-like, brilliant blue coloring.
